It's a fact: plastic is no longer welcome in our homes. This reality has encouraged companies to look for sustainable methods to produce their products with the lowest possible impact, as well as alternatives to protect them.
This search resulted in packages made from fruit waste, including some that can be transformed into a birdhouse or a flower pot. Many of these sustainable packaging have been incorporated into various brands that decided to make a change in favor of the planet and its inhabitants.
8 socially responsible packaging
One of the companies that recently beganChile Mobile Number List using them was Ferrero , a brand belonging to the candy and chocolate sector that in 2019 was criticized for its packaging, since according to a study, it is among the least recyclable. Fortunately, he has already decided to repair the damage.
Ferrero debuts new sustainable packaging
Since 2018, some environmentalists were on the lookout for Ferrero chocolate packaging because apparently these were not very environmentally friendly. This was confirmed by the results of the study carried out by consumer group Which?
From that moment on, Ferrero committed to investing more in its innovation and development departments to improve recycling and eliminate “unnecessary” plastic packaging components in the short term.
It also decided to share a long-term vision that will aim to source plastic-free alternative materials, including compostable marine solutions.
So as part of this vision and effort to improve sustainability, Ferrero became a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and joined the Foundation's Global Commitment for the New Plastics Economy, which requires signatories to achieve packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
This means that since Ferrero decided to integrate this commitment, it will be able to collaborate with companies throughout the packaging value chain to design and implement new solutions. Some of them are SC Johnson and The Lego Group .
The commitment continues…
Ferrero has also joined the 4evergreen alliance, an initiative that brings together European companies in the fiber-based packaging space. Although it has not yet announced a more specific date for reducing plastic, it does point to a desire to explore alternative materials.
As one of the world's leading confectionery companies, we are committed to finding long-term sustainable solutions for packaging and playing our part in tackling this global issue, as we know it is not a simple matter of being plastic-free or plastic.
Levi Boorer, Customer Development Director at Ferrero UK.
Furthermore, he shared that each product manufactured requires a specific packaging approach and careful selection of materials that ensures maintaining product quality and food safety while minimizing the environmental impact of carbon.
A positive pact
With this push by companies to be more sustainable and offer more responsible packaging and products, UK-based charity WRAP has been asked to act as secretariat and technical support for the European Plastics Pact, based on their successes with the UK Plastics Pact .
The European Plastics Pact was signed by 15 national governments, 82 companies, three regional governments and 43 other organisations, including NGOs, trade associations and investors.
One of the main purposes of the European Plastics Pact is to guarantee that all plastic packaging is reusable or recyclable and thereby reduce the use of virgin plastic by 20%.
It also seeks to increase recycling capacity by 25% and drive the growth of recycled plastic content to at least 30% of packaging weight. All commitments have a deadline of 2025.
The pact is being overseen by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which this week published a roadmap that describes the steps that companies, governments and stakeholders must follow until 2025. The guide, which is supported by WRAP, is based on three pillars :
Eliminate.
Innovate.
Circular.
Marcus Gover, CEO of WRAP, said the European Plastics Pact roadmap will mobilize signatories to act and focus on key outcomes that meet these ambitious goals.
It will transform our use of plastics across Europe, just as we are doing in the UK through the first Plastic Pact. May ours be the generation that gives those who follow the solution to the problem of plastic pollution.
Marcus Gover, Executive Director of WRAP.
Let's hope that more and more companies adopt this commitment and integrate truly sustainable packaging to free us from single-use or difficult-to-recycle plastic as soon as possible.
